Meet Doctor Myers: An Expert in Rehabilitation and Neuromuscular Medicine

Dr. Myers stands out as a highly experienced and dedicated physician in the field of rehabilitation medicine. His extensive career, spanning several decades at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), showcases his commitment to patient care and medical advancement. His expertise, particularly in neuromuscular diseases and spinal injury, has made him a respected figure in his field.

After earning his MD from SUNY, Downstate Medical Center in 1961, Doctor Myers embarked on rigorous training in internal medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Demonstrating an early interest in specialized areas, he pursued a year-long post-doctoral research fellowship in neuromuscular disease, supported by the NINDB, at the same institution. His commitment to service led him to the Air Force, where he contributed to exercise physiology projects at the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratories in Dayton, Ohio. Returning to civilian practice, Dr. Myers further specialized in physical medicine and rehabilitation through residency training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where he then dedicated his professional life.

His long-standing affiliation with Columbia University Medical Center culminated in his appointment as the A. David Gurewitsch Professor Emeritus of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine and Special Lecturer in the Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine. Even in semi-retirement, Doctor Myers remains actively involved as a senior attending physician at the Spinal Injury Clinic. He continues to contribute to medical education by participating in rounds with rehabilitation residents and maintains a limited private practice at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, CUMC.

For over 37 years, Dr. Myers served as the principal rehabilitation physician at the MDA Clinic at CUMC, significantly impacting the care of patients with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions. Further extending his reach, he co-founded and co-directed the MDA Clinic at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood, NJ, for a nearly equivalent period. His dedication to the broader medical community is evident through his service on professional advisory committees for organizations such as the CMT Association and the NYC Chapter of the MS Society. Doctor Myers has also contributed to hospital, university, and medical society committees and enriched the medical literature with numerous articles and chapters. Notably, he served as Co-Chief Editor for the Third Edition of Downey and Darling’s Physiological Basis of Rehabilitation Medicine, a foundational text in the field.

Doctor Myers’s exceptional contributions to medicine have been recognized through multiple listings in prestigious publications such as Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors, Top Doctors New York Metro Area, and New York Magazine’s Best Doctors during his full-time practice. On a personal note, Doctor Myers has shared over 50 years of marriage with his wife, Jacqueline, and together they have raised three children. His enduring career and personal life reflect a balanced and fulfilling life dedicated to medicine and family.
