DIY Doctor Halloween Costume Ideas: Family Fun for Whovians

Dressing up for Halloween is a beloved tradition, and what’s even better than individual costumes? Coordinated family costumes! This year, we embraced our inner nerds and took inspiration from our favorite TV show, Doctor Who, to create a fun and unique family theme. If you’re a fan of the Doctor and looking for creative Doctor Halloween Costume ideas, you’ve come to the right place.

We recently dove headfirst into the world of Doctor Who, and after binge-watching several seasons, we were completely hooked. The characters are fantastic, the storylines are captivating, and the possibilities for imaginative costumes are endless! For our family doctor halloween costume adventure, I chose to be Amy Pond, the Doctor’s fiery companion. With my red hair, half the battle was already won! My partner became Rory Williams, Amy’s husband, in his Roman Centurion guise – it’s a Doctor Who thing, trust me! And for our little one, we envisioned him as the Doctor himself, complete with a TARDIS wheelchair costume.

Crafting Rory’s Roman Centurion Armor: A DIY Guide

Finding affordable Roman armor for a Halloween costume proved to be a challenge. Instead of breaking the bank, we decided to get crafty and make our own! Foam core became our best friend for this project.

Here’s how we created Rory’s Centurion armor:

  1. Breastplate Base: We cut foam core into the shape of a breastplate.
  2. Painting and Detailing: Brown paint formed the base, and gold sponging added a metallic effect. To create the illusion of muscle definition, we used watered-down brown paint to draw on squares, mimicking the segmented look of Roman armor.

  1. Assembly: Holes punched into the breastplate allowed us to tie it securely onto the wearer.
  2. Cape Addition: A felt cape (approximately 1.5 yards) was attached to the front with Velcro, completing the Roman Centurion look.

For the under-armor outfit, simplicity was key. A plain white T-shirt and a quickly made skirt from scrap fabric did the trick. By folding the fabric selvedges, we created a natural hem, sewed a single back seam, and added an elastic casing – easy peasy!

TARDIS Wheelchair Costume: Making Halloween Accessible and Fun

To incorporate our child’s wheelchair into his doctor halloween costume, the iconic TARDIS was the perfect solution. The TARDIS, the Doctor’s time-traveling vehicle disguised as a blue police box, is instantly recognizable to Doctor Who fans.

Building the TARDIS:

  1. Foam Core Construction: We used foam core again, cutting two L-shaped pieces to allow access to the wheelchair wheels. Two 15-inch wide pieces (wheelchair width) formed the front and back.
  2. Coloring the TARDIS: The majority of the foam core was painted a vibrant blue, except for the front piece which remained white for the text details.

  1. Adding TARDIS Details: Black fabric paint was used to create the signature paneling and the “Police Box” text on the front. For the windows, glossy white cardstock was glued on and divided into panes with more black fabric paint.
  2. Assembly and Attachment: Hot glue brought all the pieces together, creating the TARDIS box. Zip ties would then be used to safely secure the TARDIS to the wheelchair.
