A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) is a fully licensed physician who practices in all areas of medicine. Like a Doctor of Medicine (MD), a DO graduates from medical school, but attends an osteopathic medical school. Both DOs and MDs are educated to use the latest medical technology and prescribe medications. However, a key distinction of osteopathic medicine is its emphasis on a whole-person approach to treatment and care.
One of the defining characteristics of a DO is their training in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). This involves hands-on techniques to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury. DOs use OMT to address musculoskeletal issues, which can affect other body systems. This manual medicine approach can include massage, stretching, and gentle pressure to encourage the body’s natural healing abilities.
After completing medical school, both DOs and MDs must undertake residency training in their chosen specialty, such as surgery, pediatrics, or internal medicine. Furthermore, to become licensed physicians, both DOs and MDs are required to pass the same national licensing examinations. This ensures that both types of physicians meet the same rigorous standards for medical practice and are fully qualified to provide comprehensive medical care to patients.
In summary, a Doctor of Osteopathy is a physician with comprehensive medical training, comparable to that of an MD, but with additional expertise in osteopathic philosophy and manual medicine. They offer a unique, patient-centered approach, integrating conventional medical treatments with hands-on care to promote overall health and wellness.
