How to Use Rug Doctor Pro for Upholstery and Stairs

Deep cleaning your upholstery and stairs can revitalize your home, removing embedded dirt and allergens. The Rug Doctor Pro, paired with its specialized upholstery tool, offers a powerful solution for this task. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to effectively use the Rug Doctor Pro for upholstery and stair cleaning.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Rug Doctor Pro

Step 1: Fabric Inspection and Area Preparation

Before you begin, it’s crucial to check the fabric care tag on your upholstery. Look for cleaning codes: “W” or “W/S” indicates water-based cleaning is safe, and the Rug Doctor Pro upholstery tool can be used. If you see “S” or “X,” refrain from using water and consult a professional cleaner. To be safe, always perform a spot test in an inconspicuous area to ensure colorfastness. Apply a small amount of cleaning solution to a hidden area and let it dry completely before proceeding. If there’s any color alteration, do not use the Rug Doctor Pro on your upholstery.

Prior to using the Rug Doctor Pro, thoroughly vacuum the upholstery or stairs. This removes loose dirt, debris, and pet hair, maximizing the effectiveness of the deep cleaning process. Pay close attention to crevices and corners where dirt tends to accumulate.

Step 2: Preparing the Rug Doctor Pro Machine

Begin by removing the clean water tank. Locate the Clean Water Tank Release button, usually at the top or back of the machine, and press it to detach the tank. Fill the tank with hot tap water. Next, add your chosen Rug Doctor or Rug Doctor by BISSELL cleaning solution. Typically, two capfuls of solution are sufficient for a full tank, but always refer to the cleaning solution instructions for precise measurements. Once filled, securely place the clean water tank back onto the Rug Doctor Pro machine, ensuring it clicks into place.

Now, prepare the hose and upholstery tool. Lift the rubber cover located on the front of the Rug Doctor Pro machine to access the Vacuum Hose Port. Attach the Hose Cuff to this port. Then, find the Solution Hose Port, usually on the bottom right side of the machine’s front, and insert the Solutions Hose. Finally, plug the Rug Doctor Pro into a grounded electrical outlet. Turn the machine on by pressing the right side of the power button to activate “TOOL” mode. This mode is specifically designed for using attachments like the upholstery tool.

Step 3: Deep Cleaning Upholstery and Stairs with Rug Doctor Pro

To begin cleaning, firmly press the head of the upholstery tool against the fabric surface. Squeeze the trigger on the tool to spray the cleaning solution onto the upholstery or carpeted stairs. While continuously squeezing the trigger, slowly pull the upholstery tool backward across the surface in a smooth, overlapping motion. A few inches before the end of your cleaning stroke, release the trigger to stop spraying solution. This prevents oversaturation and ensures effective suction.

Immediately follow each wet stroke with a dry pass. Without squeezing the trigger, move the upholstery tool over the same cleaned area again. This dry pass is essential for extracting more dirt and excess cleaning solution, accelerating the drying process and preventing overwetting. Continue this wet-and-dry cleaning process, overlapping each stroke, until the upholstery or stairs are thoroughly cleaned and the extracted solution appears clear.

When cleaning stairs, position the Rug Doctor Pro at the bottom of the staircase. Always clean from top to bottom, working your way downwards for safety and efficiency. Avoid overwetting the upholstery or stair carpets. After you have completed your cleaning, let the Rug Doctor Pro run in “TOOL” mode for approximately 15 seconds. This final suction period ensures that any remaining dirty solution within the hose is drawn into the dirty water tank, keeping the hose clean and ready for the next use.

By following these steps, you can effectively use the Rug Doctor Pro to deep clean and refresh your upholstery and stairs, leaving them looking and feeling cleaner.
