The Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) offers a premier Ph.D. program in Computer Science, consistently recognized among the nation’s best. Our distinguished alumni stand as pioneers, shaping the landscape of computer science.
Earning a Doctorate In Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon signifies a profound commitment to research. The faculty certification confirms a graduate’s comprehensive grasp of fundamental computer science principles and their capacity to significantly contribute to the field through original, impactful research, documented with scholarly rigor.
Beyond the core Ph.D. in Computer Science, we provide several interdisciplinary doctoral paths:
Ph.D. in Computer Science with a Certificate in Neural Basis of Cognition: In collaboration with the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition (CNBC), this program bridges computer science with cognitive neuroscience. Students interested in computational neuroscience might also consider the Ph.D. in Neural Computation at the Neuroscience Institute.
Ph.D. in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization (ACO): This interdisciplinary Ph.D. is jointly administered across the Computer Science Department (Algorithms and Complexity group), the Tepper School of Business (Operations Research group), and the Department of Mathematical Sciences (Discrete Mathematics group), offering a rich blend of theoretical and applied perspectives.
Ph.D. in Pure and Applied Logic (PAL): This program, administered by the Computer Science Department, the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and the Department of Philosophy, explores the foundational aspects of logic and its applications across disciplines.
Ph.D. Dual Degree Portugal Dual Degree Ph.D. Program in Computer Science: This unique program offers an international research experience, fostering collaboration between leading research institutions and equipping graduates to excel as researchers and innovators in computer science.
On-Campus Presence for Doctorate Programs
All Computer Science Department doctoral programs, including the doctorate in computer science, necessitate in-person study at our Pittsburgh campus. We do not offer remote doctoral degrees.
