Austin Roots and Renowned Education
A true Austin native, Doctor Wong‘s journey in medicine began locally at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School. He then pursued higher education at Rice University in Houston and earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, also in Houston. His medical internship took him to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, where he served as Chief Resident in Ophthalmology. Further demonstrating his leadership and expertise, Doctor Wong is a past Chief of Ophthalmology at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin and currently shares his knowledge as an affiliate faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School’s Department of Ophthalmology.

In 2012, he further solidified his commitment to advanced techniques by performing the first laser cataract surgery procedure in Austin, a method designed to enhance the precision, predictability, and safety of cataract surgery.

The Summit Autonomous Society has recognized Doctor Wong for his high volume in LASIK surgeries nationwide, and the Intralase Corporation has acknowledged him as a pioneer in iLASIK surgery. His expertise has been featured in numerous news outlets, including the Austin American Statesman, Austin Business Journal, Fox 7 News, KXAN (NBC) news, and KVUE (ABC) news over the past two decades. Furthermore, Austin Monthly magazine consistently named Doctor Wong a “Top Doctor” in Ophthalmology from 2019-2022, and Texas Monthly magazine recognized him as an Ophthalmology “Super Doctor” every year from 2012-2021.
The Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute
In a significant commitment to the future of ophthalmology, Doctor Wong, along with his wife Betty and his family, founded the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute (MSWEI) at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School in 2016. The MSWEI’s mission is to establish a world-class center for ophthalmic education, patient care, and research, training future ophthalmologists to become leaders in the field. Doctor Wong actively participates in this mission as an Affiliate Faculty member, teaching and mentoring the next generation of medical professionals.
