Doctor to Sex Trafficker: Miami Beach MD Charged in Child Sex Trafficking Case

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle and Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Clements have announced the arrest of 68-year-old Jeffrey David Kamlet, a Miami Beach doctor, on multiple human trafficking charges. The arrest, made by the State Attorney’s Human Trafficking Task Force and the Miami Beach Police Department, stems from Kamlet’s alleged involvement with two underage teenage girls, ages 17 and 16. Kamlet is accused of soliciting and purchasing sex from one of the victims, whom he met via the dating app Tinder, and providing her with controlled substances.

State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle emphasized the critical role of community vigilance in combating child trafficking. “A mother’s fear for the well-being of her daughter helped expose the alleged illegal activities of an individual who may have felt that his wealth and prominence gave him license to do anything,” stated Rundle. She praised the collaborative efforts of the Miami Beach Police Department and the Human Trafficking Task Force in apprehending individuals who exploit children.

Dr. Kamlet faces a series of serious charges, including:

  • 1 Count Human Trafficking for Commercial Sexual Activity
  • 1 Count Solicitation of a Child via Cellphone to Commit an Unlawful Sex Act
  • 2 Counts Unlawful Sexual Activity with a Minor
  • 2 Counts Delivery of a Controlled Substance
  • 2 Counts Interference with Custody of a Child

The alleged offenses occurred between April 27, 2022, and August 3, 2022. The investigation began when the mother of the 17-year-old victim contacted the Broward Sheriff’s Office to report her daughter and her 16-year-old friend missing. The mother tracked her daughter’s iPhone to a condominium in Miami Beach, prompting the Broward Sheriff’s Office to seek assistance from the Miami Beach Police Department.

Upon arriving at the Miami Beach address, police encountered Kamlet. According to police video, Kamlet initially claimed the girls sought refuge with him to escape a dangerous individual. He also falsely stated to officers that he believed the girls were 18, claiming they presented identification and that he had met them on Tinder. However, the girls informed officers they had no identification. Police took the minors into protective custody to reunite them with their parents. Subsequently, during interviews, the girls detailed sexual encounters with Kamlet.

Even after police intervention and the girls’ return home, Kamlet allegedly continued to contact the 17-year-old victim through social media. He is accused of again soliciting and purchasing sex from her, bringing her back to his condominium where he allegedly provided her with cocaine before engaging in further sexual activity.

Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Clements underscored the department’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children. “Children are the most vulnerable segment of our community and must always be protected,” Chief Clements stated. He commended the cooperative investigation that led to Kamlet’s arrest, highlighting the importance of inter-agency collaboration in addressing crimes against children.
