Doctor Strange Wong Marvel Legends Set: A Deep Dive Review

As 2025 draws to a close, it’s time to unwrap and examine some of the coolest collectibles from the holiday season. Among the treasures gifted by family, the Amazon exclusive Marvel Legends Series set featuring Wong, Bats, and Doctor Strange stands out. While my recent collecting focus has leaned heavily towards X-Men and mutant-related figures, I always make room for exceptional releases from Hasbro, and this set had certainly caught my eye – likely even made its way onto my Amazon wish list! Hasbro has truly delivered some stellar figures this year, and this particular set, with its emphasis on magic and the mystical side of Marvel, held significant appeal. My long-standing desire for a comic-accurate Wong figure, in particular, made this set irresistible. While the movie version figure was commendable and Benedict Wong’s portrayal of Wong is fantastic, my preference generally leans towards comic-inspired renditions. It’s almost unbelievable that it has taken over two decades for Wong to receive a non-movie-based Marvel Legends figure, especially considering his prominent role in the comics. Adding to the allure, I was intrigued by Bats, a character new to me – a spectral Basset Hound? The concept immediately resonated. Having lost beloved pets over the years, the idea of them as spectral companions is incredibly appealing. A brand-new comic Doctor Strange, the first-ever comic Wong, and Bats, the ghost dog sidekick? This set practically sells itself! Let’s delve into a detailed review and explore what makes this set a must-have for Marvel Legends collectors.

Doctor Strange Figure Comparison

This new Doctor Strange draws inspiration from his more contemporary comic appearances, yet the figure’s foundation is clearly rooted in the classic Doctor Strange figure released in 2022. While sharing similarities, key distinctions in portraits, capes, and paint applications set them apart, catering to fans of the Sorcerer Supreme. Owning both figures allows for части swapping to create two unique and impressive versions of Doctor Strange.

The Positives: Wong and Beyond

  • Wong’s Classic Comic Look: Wong’s appearance is superb, embodying a classic aesthetic that seamlessly integrates into virtually any comic-based display. While Wong has donned various outfits throughout his history, this particular Tang suit (Tangzhuang) is instantly recognizable and appears to be a completely original sculpt. The green suit with yellow cuffs and gold fasteners, complete with sculpted folds that convey the fabric’s looser fit, is exceptionally well-executed. While less flamboyant than his MCU attire, it exudes practicality and allows for unimpeded movement – crucial for a master martial artist like Wong.

  • Experienced Wong Headsculpt: Current comic depictions often portray Wong as younger. This figure, however, presents a more mature, middle-aged, and experienced Wong. His stern gaze and the detailed facial sculpt, enhanced by excellent face printing, give him significant character. Wong’s meticulously crafted eyebrows are particularly noteworthy, adding to his expressive presence.

  • Impressive Sleeve Design: The sleeves are a standout detail. Recessed with the wrist as a separate inner piece, they create a convincing layered effect. While extremely close inspection reveals the construction, under normal viewing conditions, they appear remarkably realistic.

  • Exceptional Articulation for Wong: Wong’s articulation is outstanding. Movement is largely unhindered, and the joints offer an excellent range. All joints are firm, smooth, and pinless, allowing for dynamic posing whether utilizing magical effects or showcasing martial arts prowess.

  • Variety of Hands for Wong: Wong includes six interchangeable hands: grappling “Tiger’s Claw” hands, standard gripping hands, and “hook” hand gestures. This selection provides diverse posing options. While standard fists are absent, suitable alternatives can likely be found within most collectors’ parts bins.

  • Magical Chakra Hands: Reusing the magical chakra hands from previous MCU Wong and Doctor Strange figures, these translucent yellow and orange accessories with intricate patterns enhance Wong’s mystical displays. They pair well with martial arts poses, blending magic and combat seamlessly.

  • Bats – A Unique Spectral Companion: Bats, despite being an accessory to Wong, is a standout addition. This small, non-articulated, translucent green ghost Basset Hound is a first for Marvel Legends. His floppy features, long ears, and tail are charming, and the translucent green gradient, with pale paws and a dark green head, is a cool effect. A small paint application highlights Bats’ nose, adding a touch of detail.

  • Display Stand for Bats: Bats includes a simple stand, allowing for hovering poses, perfect for displaying him alongside Wong or Doctor Strange.

  • Darker and Detailed Doctor Strange: This Doctor Strange figure, while using a classic color scheme, presents a darker and more detailed rendition compared to previous versions. The tunic symbol is more pronounced, painted grey with a hint of blue. The new Cloak of Levitation sculpt, while not removable, is dramatically posed and visually striking.

  • Unique Doctor Strange Headsculpt: The headsculpt is distinct, appearing as a modern Doctor Strange, though perhaps less reminiscent of the 1970s look of the previous figure. The paintwork is well-applied, and the reddish-gold eyes are particularly intriguing, adding an otherworldly element.

  • Solid Doctor Strange Articulation: Mirroring Wong, Doctor Strange’s articulation is excellent, utilizing newer pinless joints. He is stable, poseable, and enjoyable to handle. While tunic design slightly restricts hip movement, it’s minimal. The legs feel sturdier than the previous release, enabling him to stand unaided even with the cape.

  • Purple Chakra Hands for Doctor Strange: Doctor Strange also includes chakra hands, molded in purple plastic with subtle color variation from edge to center, enhancing their visual appeal.

  • Bonus Dormammu Head and Crown: A notable inclusion is an alternate Dormammu head and his barbed black crown. This head, likely intended for the standalone Dormammu figure from the Super Villains series, features lighter flames and a darker mask compared to the original, creating a striking contrast. The crown adds to Dormammu’s imposing presence and can be used with either Dormammu figure or even displayed with Doctor Strange, referencing comic book covers.

  • Improved Cloak of Levitation: The new Cloak of Levitation sculpt is superior to previous iterations. Cleaner paint, enhanced edge details, and an overall refined shape contribute to a better design.

The Negatives: Minor Imperfections

  • Static Cape of Levitation: While improved, the Cloak of Levitation remains a static, plastic piece. A wired, soft goods cape would have been a significant upgrade, especially given the increasing prevalence of wired capes even in lower-priced figure lines. This set seemed like an ideal opportunity to implement a high-quality soft goods Cape of Levitation.

  • Fragile Forearm Glue: During hand swapping on Doctor Strange, the glue on the left forearm of my figure detached. The forearms are glued on, requiring caution during accessory changes. A bit of Loctite resolved the issue, but it’s worth noting.

Final Verdict: A Magical Marvel Legends Set

This Marvel Legends set is truly impressive. While both figures are excellent releases, Wong, accompanied by Bats, steals the show. It highlights the sometimes unpredictable nature of Hasbro’s multi-packs – this set is packed with extras like Bats and the Dormammu head, while other sets can feel comparatively sparse. Despite minor drawbacks like the static cape and potential forearm glue issue, this set earns a “Great and a 1/2” rating. It introduces two significant comic characters (and comic versions of existing ones) to the Marvel Legends lineup. Keep an eye out for potential Amazon sales, but even at full price, this set is a worthwhile addition for collectors. This marks the first Bats figure reviewed on this site.
