Dr. Romero’s journey in medicine began at the Pontifical Xavierian University in Bogotá, Colombia, where he earned his Physician and Surgeon degree, graduating in the top 5% of his class in 1995. Demonstrating his early commitment to eye health, he spent a year in community service at the Santander Ophthalmological Foundation, focusing on blindness prevention. Seeking to expand his expertise, Dr. Romero moved to the United States, achieving high scores on the USMLE medical boards and obtaining ECFMG certification. He further honed his skills through a two-year research fellowship in retinal imaging at the prestigious New York Eye & Ear Infirmary.

Following an internship at the Hospital of Saint Raphael of Yale University, Dr. Romero returned to the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary for his ophthalmology residency. His pursuit of specialized knowledge led him to the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit for a Vitreo-Retinal fellowship. Dr. Romero’s commitment to excellence is underscored by his board certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology, achieved with a remarkable 99th percentile score on the written exam.

Before joining Long Island & Queens Vitreoretinal Consultants of NY in 2007, Dr. Romero served as part-time faculty at the Retina Center of the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary while also practicing privately for three years. His professional affiliations include esteemed organizations such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retinal Specialists, reflecting his dedication to staying at the forefront of his field. He also contributes to the education of future ophthalmologists as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at both New York Eye & Ear Infirmary and Northwell Health – Hofstra School of Medicine.

Dr. Romero is a published author of numerous peer-reviewed articles on retinal imaging and holds the significant role of Spanish Language Editor for the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). His research contributions have been recognized with awards such as the ARVO/NIH Travel Fellowship Grant and the Paul Kayser International Scholar award. Dr. Romero collaborates in clinical studies to advance treatments for retinal diseases, with particular expertise in diabetic retinopathy, complex retinal detachments, macular degeneration, and retinal vein occlusions. He is proficient in advanced retinal imaging and surgical techniques, including scleral sutured intra-ocular lens implantation. Dr. Romero’s dedication extends to public education, as demonstrated by his appearance on Telemundo’s “Videos Noticias” to discuss macular degeneration and retinal health.
