Dr. C. Tuna, a name synonymous with quality, ethics, and innovation in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry, was more than just a founder; he was a visionary whose principles continue to shape Farmasi today. Born in 1923 in Edirne, Turkey, a historic city bordering Bulgaria, Cevdet Tuna’s early life was marked by a strong emphasis on education and a deep-seated desire to serve his community and country.
Growing up as the 7th of nine children, Dr. C. Tuna belonged to a family that profoundly valued learning. This commitment to education is evidenced by the remarkable achievement of the nine siblings collectively graduating from eleven universities in the first half of the 20th century. Dr. C. Tuna’s formal education began in 1930 at Balıkpazarı Elementary School in Edirne. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Haydarpasa High School, from which he graduated in 1941. Following high school, Dr. C. Tuna seized the opportunity to study at Goethe Medical School in Germany, furthering his ambitions in medicine and science.
Upon completing his medical education, Dr. C. Tuna returned to Turkey, driven by a patriotic desire to contribute to his homeland. His early career saw him serving as the sole lieutenant physician in Hadimkoy, Istanbul, during a critical period post-war, starting in 1950. His dedication was focused on providing crucial medical care to soldiers during this demanding time. In 1952, Dr. C. Tuna transitioned into entrepreneurship, establishing Tege Pharmaceutical Factory, one of the pioneering pharmaceutical manufacturers in Turkey. His innovative spirit quickly became apparent as he formulated some of Turkey’s first domestically produced remedies, including cough syrup, painkillers, burn ointment, and cough tablets. Dr. C. Tuna was deeply involved in every aspect of product development, demonstrating a meticulous approach to creating new and effective formulations. Furthermore, showcasing his commitment to quality and scientific rigor, he also founded the first analysis laboratory in Turkey concurrently.
After 22 years of dedicated expansion, Dr. C. Tuna sold his shares in Tege Pharmaceutical Factory to a foreign investment enterprise in 1977. However, his entrepreneurial journey was far from over. Between 1977 and 1995, he became a key importer of raw materials for pharmaceutical products, supplying approximately 13,500 pharmacies across Turkey. During this period, he also acted as a trustee, supporting small and medium-sized domestic drug companies, further cementing his influence and contribution to the Turkish pharmaceutical sector. In 1998, at an age when many consider retirement, Dr. C. Tuna embarked on a new venture, establishing Tanalize Cosmetics, which soon gave rise to the internationally recognized brand, Farmasi.
Today, Farmasi stands as a testament to Dr. C. Tuna’s enduring vision, producing over 2000 diverse products. Notably, the Dr. C. Tuna product range represents the company’s medical and specialized skincare series, a direct reflection of his initial expertise and passion. Dr. C. Tuna served as the honorary president of Farmasi, guiding the company until his passing in 2017. Farmasi’s manufacturing takes place in an integrated cosmetics factory spanning over 100,000 square meters. This state-of-the-art facility not only handles bulk production but also manages the majority of its packaging in-house, ensuring quality control and efficiency. With a daily production capacity exceeding 1000 tons, the factory comprises six distinct units dedicated to personal care, wet wipes, makeup, perfumes, plastic packaging, and laminated tubes, making it a truly integrated operation. Throughout his remarkable 63-year career, Dr. C. Tuna’s guiding principles centered on a profound love for his work, a belief in people as the most valuable asset, and a commitment to employee education for building strong, reliable partnerships.
Dr. C. Tuna’s legacy extends beyond business success. He instilled a strong ethical framework within Farmasi, encapsulated in the “Golden Rules” that govern product development and manufacturing. These rules ensure Farmasi products are free from harmful substances such as parabens, triclosan, heavy metals, phosphates, formaldehyde, and phthalates. All products undergo rigorous dermatological testing and are developed in Farmasi laboratories, adhering to a strict policy against the use of animal ingredients or endangered plants. Farmasi is committed to cruelty-free practices and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards in all production processes. Furthermore, Farmasi roll-on deodorants are formulated without aluminum, reflecting a commitment to consumer health and safety.
Beyond product formulations, Dr. C. Tuna’s ethical compass guided the entire operation of Farmasi. His emphasis on valuing people and fostering partnerships extended to fair labor practices and a commitment to contributing positively to society. This ethical foundation ensures Farmasi operates with integrity, transparency, and a deep sense of responsibility towards its customers, employees, and the global community.
Dr. C. Tuna’s passing in 2017 marked the end of an era, but his vision and principles continue to drive Farmasi. His dedication to empowering individuals, creating innovative products, and contributing to humankind remains the core mission of the company he built. The Dr. C. Tuna product line, in particular, stands as a lasting tribute to his expertise and commitment to health, beauty, and ethical business practices.
