Crafting Your Own Plague Doctor Hat Mask: A DIY Guide

Once you have prepared the head, eye pieces, and beak components for your plague doctor mask, the next stage is to assemble them. Gummed tape is an excellent material for this purpose. Begin by securing the pieces together on the exterior of the mask using gummed tape. Ensure these initial tapes are firmly in place and allow them to dry completely.

To enhance the mask’s structural integrity, apply a subsequent layer of gummed tape to the interior surfaces of the mask. This reinforcement step is crucial for rigidity. Holding the mask against a bright light during this process can be beneficial, as it allows you to identify and strengthen any thinner or weaker areas. Again, let the taped interior dry thoroughly.

For an added textural element to your mask’s surface, consider using flexible decorator’s caulk. This readily available and quick-drying material can create an interesting finish. At this point, you can also carefully cut the nostril slits into the beak, shaping them as desired with the caulk. Integrating the elastic for securing the mask to your head can also be done now; staple it to the inside of the mask, and then conceal the staples on the exterior with caulk. Allow the caulk to dry fully, ideally overnight, to ensure it sets properly.

Painting is the next step in bringing your Plague Doctor Hat mask to life. A cream-colored vinyl satin paint works effectively for the main mask. Remember to paint the interior of the eye pieces black to enhance the visual effect. After the paint has dried completely, attach the eye piece covers. These can be crafted from expanded aluminum mesh, sprayed gold and shaped around the jars used to form the eyepieces. Self-amalgamating tape is ideal for binding the mesh securely in place.

Creating this distinctive plague doctor hat mask is a project achievable in around three and a half hours, typically spread across four days to accommodate drying times. While the exact cost may vary depending on material availability, the principle of using gummed tape remains versatile for constructing various mask designs.
