Crafting paper props can be a deeply engaging project, especially when it’s inspired by iconic elements from beloved shows like Doctor Who. This project focuses on recreating Sally Sparrow’s Weeping Angels dossier from the acclaimed episode “Blink,” aiming for a faithful and detailed replica.
The initial step involved reproducing the photographs Sally Sparrow takes at Wester Drumlins. On screen, viewers catch glimpses of chilling images: an angel obscuring its face and another, more disturbingly, decapitated. For the first image, a cleaned-up and digitally enhanced screen-grab was utilized. The headless angel photo was sourced from a Doctor Who exhibition, featuring an original Weeping Angel statue, which was then further manipulated in Photoshop to mirror the on-screen version’s eerie aesthetic.
Further enriching the dossier’s visual elements, additional screenshots were incorporated – another menacing angel image and a fragment of the Doctor’s cryptic message from the wall. To contextualize the setting, an online photograph of the building exterior used as Wester Drumlins in the “Blink” episode was also added to the collection.
The dossier isn’t solely visual; it also contains textual documents. A transcription of the pivotal conversation between Sally Sparrow and the Doctor is included, offering a textual anchor to the episode’s narrative. Furthermore, a list of DVDs owned by Sally, crucial for the episode’s Easter Eggs, was meticulously recreated. Although barely visible on screen, this list was elevated with a custom-designed Bantos DVD shop logo, crafted in Illustrator to resemble professional letterhead, adding a layer of authenticity. Drawing inspiration from the BBC art department, which created approximately eleven fictitious DVD covers for “Blink,” these titles were incorporated alongside original titles to populate Sally’s DVD collection.
The physical housing of these documents, the folder itself, was also carefully constructed to complete the prop.
Beyond screen-accurate reproductions, the project extends into imaginative territory, incorporating elements that could plausibly enhance Sally’s story and provide the Doctor with further clues. This expansion suggests a deeper engagement with the source material and a desire to enrich the narrative experience of the Sally Sparrow dossier. This meticulously crafted replica serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of “Blink” and the dedication of Doctor Who fans to bringing elements of the show to life.
