DBA vs. Ph.D.: Understanding the Distinction
While a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) share similarities as terminal degrees, key differences exist in program duration, structure, ideal candidate profiles, curriculum focus, and expected career outcomes. DBA candidates typically aim to enhance business practices, cultivate innovative perspectives through applied research, and create pathways for career evolution, potentially including roles in academia. Conversely, Ph.D. candidates generally pursue full-time, research-intensive careers primarily within academic institutions.
The fundamental approach to research also differs between these two prestigious programs. DBA students engage in applied research, utilizing research methods and business theory to directly address and solve real-world business challenges within their dissertations. Ph.D. research, in contrast, is typically rooted in theory and explores broader, discipline-specific topics, often contributing to theoretical frameworks.
