Phil, a name synonymous with dedication and compassion, began his life journey in Greeley, Colorado, but spent his formative years in the welcoming community of Littleton. After graduating from Arapahoe High School, he pursued higher education at the University of Colorado, earning a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree. Even during his college years, Phil’s passion for community shone through as he dedicated his spare time to coaching little league football and baseball. This early commitment to nurturing and guiding others foreshadowed his future path. Phil continued his academic pursuits at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, achieving his Doctor of Medicine Degree, a testament to his intellectual prowess and drive. His specialization in Gastroenterology led him to further studies at the University of Michigan and UCLA, solidifying his expertise in the field.
Upon completing his extensive medical training, Doctor Phill embarked on his professional career, joining a prominent Gastroenterology practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he served for three years. His heart, however, drew him back to Littleton, Colorado. Returning with his wife and two young children, he dedicated twenty-two years of service to South Denver Gastroenterology. Later in his distinguished career, Doctor Phill assumed the esteemed position of Chief of Gastroenterology and Associate Professor of Medicine at National Jewish Health, a role he held with immense pride and dedication until his retirement in 2015.
Beyond his remarkable achievements as a doctor, Doctor Phill was the cornerstone of a loving family. He cherished his wife Kathy and together they built not only a family but also their dream home. Amidst a demanding career, he prioritized family moments. Quiet evenings spent grilling and sharing wine in their backyard, cheering from the sidelines at his children’s sporting events – from soccer to football – and weekend golf outings with family were treasured times. He actively supported his daughter’s passion for dance and was a constant coach and caregiver for his son through various sports endeavors. Notably, Doctor Phill shared an especially deep connection with his youngest son, Eric, who faced physical and developmental challenges. He held dear the simple joys of car rides and tricycle adventures with Eric. He took immense pride in the accomplishments of all his children and the adults they became. Shortly before his passing, he was overjoyed by the arrival of his twin grandchildren, Brooks and Kinsley.
Doctor Phill’s legacy is one of profound love and empathy. He will be remembered for his quick wit, dry humor, brilliant mind, and insatiable thirst for knowledge. He embraced life to the fullest and leaves behind a void deeply felt by his wife of thirty-seven years, Kathy; his children, Adam (and wife Jenny), Lauren (and husband Brian), and Eric; his mother, Faydene; his brother Mark and family; and a vast extended family and countless friends.
Let us celebrate Doctor Phill’s life by recalling his humor, honoring his brilliance, and remembering his compassionate spirit. Let us raise a glass to his enduring legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Bethesda Lutheran Communities, an organization supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, reflecting Doctor Phill’s compassionate nature and his special bond with his son Eric.
