Visionary director and playwright Robert Icke, acclaimed for his adaptations of classic works, brings his North American premiere, “The Doctor,” to the Armory. Following successful runs at London’s Almeida Theatre and in the West End, this gripping moral thriller delves into the complexities of our modern age. Adapted from Arthur Schnitzler’s 1912 play Professor Bernhardi, Icke uses the framework of medical ethics to dissect pressing issues of faith, identity, race, gender, privilege, and scientific rationality. This play challenges audiences to confront their own perspectives and consider the multifaceted nature of truth in a world of increasingly polarized viewpoints.
At the heart of “The Doctor” is Olivier Award-winner Juliet Stevenson, delivering a powerhouse performance as the central doctor. The play masterfully blurs lines and expectations, ensuring that nothing is as straightforward as it initially appears. This production serves as a potent commentary on the divisions within contemporary society, highlighting how conflicting beliefs about self-perception and our world amplify life’s inherent complexities. It’s more than just a play; it’s an experience that encourages introspection and critical thinking about the world around us.
