Visiting the doctor can sometimes feel a little scary for kids. But guess who’s here to make doctor visits fun and not frightening at all? It’s Doctor Barney! Join us as we explore a pretend checkup with Barney and learn how doctors help keep us healthy and happy.
Let’s Visit Doctor Barney’s Office
Kathy is feeling a little worried because she has a doctor’s appointment tomorrow. Even though she knows it’s just a checkup and she’s not sick, she’s still a bit scared. Barney understands exactly how she feels! He reminds everyone that doctors care about us and want to help us stay healthy or get better when we’re not feeling well.
To show Kathy (and all his friends) that there’s nothing to fear, Barney suggests a make-believe doctor visit right in the classroom! What a fantastic idea! This way, Kathy can see what a checkup is like and feel more comfortable about her real appointment.

A Pretend Checkup with Doctor Barney
In their pretend doctor’s office, Barney magically transforms into Doctor Barney! Nurse Tasha is there to assist. Kathy and her teddy bear, Teddy, are the brave patients.
First, Nurse Tasha welcomes Kathy to the waiting room, filled with fun books and toys. Waiting for the doctor can actually be fun! Then, it’s Kathy’s turn to see Doctor Barney.
Doctor Barney explains that a checkup is all about seeing how much Kathy has grown and making sure every part of her body is healthy. Let’s see what happens during a checkup:
-
Weight and Height: Just like a real doctor, Doctor Barney checks Kathy’s weight on a special scale and measures her height. Wow, 48 inches tall and 58 pounds! Nurse Tasha carefully records everything.
-
Eye and Ear Check: Using a little flashlight, Doctor Barney gently looks into Kathy’s eyes and ears. He’s making sure everything looks bright and clear.

-
Mouth Check: Time for the tongue depressor! Doctor Barney asks Kathy to say “Ahhh” to check her mouth and throat. Everything looks good!
-
Reflexes: Doctor Barney uses a teeny tiny hammer to check Kathy’s reflexes. It makes her knee jump! “Stupendous reflexes!” declares Doctor Barney.
-
Listening to the Heart: With a stethoscope, Doctor Barney listens to Kathy’s heart. It sounds like a drum with a real good beat!

What About Shots?
Uh oh, shots! Kathy gets a little worried. But Doctor Barney explains that even make-believe shots can help real shots seem less scary. Shots are a special kind of medicine that can prevent us from getting very sick.
Nurse Tasha pretends to give Kathy a shot. It’s quick, and Doctor Barney makes sure Kathy knows it’s over before she even realizes! A pretty bandage and a sticker for being brave are the perfect rewards.
Now Kathy isn’t scared to visit the real doctor anymore! Doctor Barney’s pretend checkup worked wonders.
