Remembering Doctor Beard: Dr. Eldon Severin Beard’s Life of Service and Passion

Dr. Eldon Severin Beard, affectionately known to many as Doctor Beard, passed away unexpectedly at his Kernersville residence on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on July 9, 1956, in North Augusta, Georgia, to Dr. Stanford Beard and Lois Whatley Beard, Eldon spent his formative years in Buies Creek, North Carolina, cultivating the values that would define his life.

Doctor Beard’s commitment to knowledge and healing led him to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry in 1978. He further pursued his passion for medicine at Wake Forest University, graduating with his Medical Degree in 1982. This dedication culminated in him becoming a respected family medicine physician, a role he embraced wholeheartedly. In 1987, Dr. Beard established his practice, Family Care of Winston-Salem, where he served his community with compassion and expertise for many years. His patients knew him not just as a doctor, but as a caring individual who listened and provided comfort alongside medical care.

Beyond his medical practice, Doctor Beard was a man of diverse talents and interests. He was an accomplished author, having recently published his third book, showcasing his intellectual curiosity and ability to communicate effectively beyond the medical field. His love for the natural world was evident in his passion for gardening and beekeeping. These hobbies were not just pastimes but reflections of his nurturing spirit and appreciation for the intricacies of life, mirroring his approach to medicine and patient care.

Dr. Eldon Severin Beard was more than just Doctor Beard to his family; he was a loving husband, father, Papa, brother, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Pamela McBride Beard, who shared his life and passions; his children, Justin Beard (with wife Jess), April Elizabeth Beard, and Joe Beard; and his bonus children, Stephen Brown (with wife Andrea), Sarah Billups (with husband Joey), and Seth Brown. His legacy also extends to eight grandchildren: Chai, Asher, Hosanna, Mercy, Avi, Julia, Wesley, and Henry, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also remembered by his brother, Kevin Beard (with wife Cathey) and their daughters, Kristen and Lauren, as well as the family’s beloved rescue dogs, Bella and Beau. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Vicki Carter Beard.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Doctor Beard will be held at The Crossing Church – Union Cross Campus on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 7:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Pete Kunkle and Pastor Dan Hipply. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 pm to 6:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Eldon’s name to The Crossing Church – Union Cross Campus or to Hasten International Medical Missions, organizations that reflect his values and desire to make a positive impact on the world. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
